Getting Arrested in Egypt
Giza Egypt, home of the Great Pyramids of Egypt and a very difficult local police force as you'll see in this video. It's a ridiculous and crazy story that shouldn't have happened and needs to be shared because I'm not the only one that I've met that has experienced this. I hope this educates , informs and brings to light the difficulties many tourists have with the authorities outside the pyramids and archeological site.
Question, was I really arrested? --- "Arrested" is defined as "seize (someone) by legal authority and take into custody", so to answer the most common question, yes I was arrested but not charged with anything.
Before the pandemic hit last year, I was able to travel to Egypt, Pre-Pandemic, no masks. This brand new video is part of that trip that I've kept in archive u...

Jailing women for 'immoral acts': Egypt's morality laws explained | DW Feature
An Egyptian court recently decided to prosecute actress Rania Youssef for wearing a revealing lace dress on the red carpet in Cairo. Youssef's case isn't the first time an Egyptian celebrity has been charged with violating so-called ‘moral norms’. The country has made countless headlines for jailing women over these issues. But why is Egyptian society so obsessed with what women wear, say and do? Activists have accused authorities of using so-called moral crimes to control women.

Egypt extends emergency law
The Egyptian parliament has just given the go-ahead for some of the country's emergency laws to be extended.
The decades-old regulations were put in place after the assasination of Anwar Sadat, the former Egyptian president, almost 30 years ago.
Now the government has decided to lift some of those original restrictions - the changes state that the law would only apply to terror and drugs cases.
Analysts argue that the latest step is a legal ploy that masks the law's violation of basic human rights.
Al Jazeera's Amr El-Kahky reports.

Why Egypt Can’t Afford Its $58B New Capital City | WSJ Breaking Ground
Egypt is building a new $58 billion administrative capital from the ground up. But what began as a ploy to decongest Cairo’s traffic, has quickly racked up criticism over a growing budget and questions about who this new city benefits.
Sitting over 20 miles east of Cairo, the new capital plans to include a miles-long central park, a main business district with a Chinese-built tower and a massive new headquarters for the Egyptian Ministry of Defense, known as the Octagon. But how many people can afford to live in this city designed for 6 million people?
WSJ looks at what this new desert city reveals about Egypt’s plans for the future and looks at the debt it’s racking up to get there.

What Punishment was like in Ancient Egypt
Ancient Egyptian civilization began roughly seven thousand years ago. It might be hard to believe but even in those times, Egypt had laws and rules like we have today. Egypt's former leaders ruled the nation with what many deemed "excessive force", locking up people without due process and keeping them incarcerated even after courts demanded their release.
Since the fall of Mubarak, however, concern has been growing at the army's use of military tribunals and quashing of dissent.
Al Jazeera's Zeina Khodr reports from Cairo on the calls to scrap Egypt's emergency law.

Egypt's legal system bogged down with trials
A court in Egypt has adjourned the mass trial of more than 1,200 supporters of deposed Islamist President Mohamed Morsi after a brief hearing, state media reported.
The legal proceedings are part of a crackdown by the military-installed authorities on Morsi's supporters who remain steadfast in demanding his reinstatement.
Al Jazeera speaks with Graeme Bannerman, of the Middle East Institute, on how the country's legal system is coping with the number of trials in the country.

At Al Jazeera English, we focus on people and events that affect people's lives. We bring topics to light that often go under-reported, listening to all sides of the story and giving a 'voice to the voiceless.'
